Because I am an unabashed nerd, the movies I’m most excited about are documentaries, but this Fourth of July weekend, there’s a little something for everybody in Lakeview:
At Landmark Century Centre Cinema (2828 N. Clark):
Beginners: Cute Ewan McGregor, his cute gay dad, and a cute dog. Read my review here.
Buck: Doc about a real-life horse whisperer. I cried at the trailer.
Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop: Follows the late-night funnyman in the wake of last year’s controversial screw-over courtesy of NBC. To paraphrase Rebecca Black, I I I so excited.
Midnight in Paris: If your weekend could use a hint of whimsy. I found it tres bon.
Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times: The world-famous newsroom deals with the rapidly-changing media. I completely nerded out when I found this movie existed.
The Tree of Life: Because the Fourth is a perfect time to idealize a childhood where your dad, Brad Pitt, hit you. While playing a drinking game.
The Trip: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon drive a car, eat food and pretend to be Michael Caine. Not my bag, but maybe it’s yours.
At Music Box (3733 N. Southport):
Taxi Driver: Yes, that Taxi Driver. The one I’m afraid to see because even the little clips of De Niro give me nightmares.
Bride Flight: Romantic drama set in post-World War II New Zealand. Much better.
Midnight movies Trollhunter and Hobo With a Shotgun veer toward horror-camp, while morning matinees How to Marry a Millionaire and Bill Cunningham New York keep it classy.
Stay cool and happy viewing!
